Roles

Fisters operate under a fundamentally different paradigm of interpersonal interaction than that commonly associated with traditional anal sex. Applying the assumptions of one paradigm to the other frequently results in misunderstandings regarding roles, relationships, identity, and control.

Positional Proclivities

Role demographics in the fisting community differ markedly from those associated with traditional anal sex. Understanding this distribution helps explain many of the community's expectations regarding identity, partner selection, and role flexibility.

Versatility

Most fisters are versatile. Five percent of fisters are exclusive tops, about fifteen percent are exclusive bottoms, and the remaining eighty percent flip between top and bottom. Among those who are versatile, a majority prefer bottoming but have no issues "returning the favor" (flipping with their partner during a play session.)

Some fisters will only flip out of reciprocal obligation. They are known as obligatory vers. Obligatory versatile fisters are frequently perceived as dishonest and are received poorly by fully versatile fisters. Their topping skills are lackluster and their ability to connect while topping is extremely limited. Fully versatile fisters typically pass on play opportunities with obligatory vers fisters.

Position Breakdown
Position Breakdown
Figure 1.1: Fisting Role Demographics

Unlike traditional sex, most fisters are versatile and prefer playing with other versatile guys. Those who bottom exclusively have more difficulty finding partners than those who are versatile.

Service Tops

Exclusive fisting tops frequently identify as service tops. Service tops take pleasure in providing pleasure to their partner (rather than focusing on getting off). Many are submissive.

Shaming / Persecution Complex

Fisters that identify as exclusive bottoms frequently receive heavy criticism, pushback, or disapproval from versatile fisters who may perceive bottom exclusivity as closedminded, selfish, or lazy. This bottom shaming behavior is inappropriate. It is also inappropriate for exclusive bottoms to don a persecution complex and harass or impune any fister who refuses to engage or play with them. Turning down a play request because of a bottom's exclusivity is not an act of bottom shaming.

Avoiding stereotypes and negativity directed at others in online profiles demonstrates good character and increases play opportunities.

Identity Foreclosure

In the context of fisting, identity foreclosure refers to prematurely adopting a fixed participation role (top or bottom) before gaining sufficient experience to make an informed decision.

Many newcomers start their fisting experience with a foreclosed identity, assuming that the participation role they established in traditional anal sex automatically applies to fisting. In most cases, this assumption is neither intentional nor made knowingly.

New fisters should avoid painting themselves into a corner by prematurely adopting a fixed fisting identity.

VOCABULARY

Identity Foreclosure

  1. Noun Phrase the premature adoption of an identity before a person has explored other possibilities or gained sufficient experience to make an informed decision.
Example: Ezra had always been an enthusiastic, proud bottom. When introduced to fisting, he maintained this identity and declined every opportunity to top. Many years later, he discovered that he enjoyed topping and realized that his initial identity foreclosure had unnecessarily restricted his experiences within the fisting community.

New fisters who prematurely adopt a fixed participation role may experience the following:

  • Lost Play Opportunities | An exclusive bottom identity reduces the amount of compatible play partners because most fisters are versatile and prefer reciprocal play.
  • Limited Progression | Restricting participation to a single role limits the understanding gained by experiencing the activity from both perspectives, slowing overall development.
  • Reduced Session Time | Partners who are comfortable exchanging roles can alternate when one participant becomes fatigued, allowing play sessions to continue significantly longer.
  • Psychological Resilience | Accidents and injuries that restrict access to play cause extreme psychological trauma in an exclusive bottom. A versatile fister can top until injuries heal and experiences less distress.
  • Lack of Community | Exclusive fisters often find it more difficult to integrate into a community where versatility is the norm.

Relationship Dynamics

Power Dynamics

Control

During traditional sex, the top usually drives the type of play, the pace of play, and the intensity of play. During most fisting encounters, the top cedes this control to the bottom.

In some cases, this inversion of traditional power dynamics is very noticeable. A bottom may verbalize direction, set positions and configurations, and ease down onto a fist. The hand is often a living dildo. In other cases, the inversion of power is less evident. Body language, parasympathetic responses, and behavior provide instruction to the top on his engagement style.

Ceding full control to a top during a session is rare, but it does happen in very specific scenarios. These rare scenarios usually occur where trust between partners is already established. This type of trust exists between regular fisting buddies or between very advanced fisters (both top and bottom).

BDSM Ideology

A majority of fisters do not consider fisting to be a BDSM activity under the traditional, simplified understanding of BDSM. Many feel it does not fit neatly into any of the three classical divisions: BD, DS, or SM.

New and novice fisters often enter the activity expecting themes such as dominance, submission, restraint, or pleasurable pain. While these elements may be present for some individuals, they are generally less central to fisting than many newcomers expect.

Letter Signifies Definition Relevance
B Bondage Constraint or restriction on movement.

In a fisting session, the bottom typically has free range of movement. Limitations affect headspace and detract from the overall experience.

Very few fisters consider bondage part of the fisting experience.

D Discipline (Punitive) Punishment for unaceptable behavior.

In fisting, penetration is the desired outcome rather than a sanction or correction.

Most fisters would not relate discipline in this construct to fisting.

Discipline (Obedience / Structure) Adherence to stringent rules and regulation.

There are hundreds of guidelines and practices governing fisting, but strict adherence is not critical.

This definition is not extremely relevant to fisting.

Discipline (Instructional / Improvement) Training or conditioning for betterment or progress.

Many bottoms continually seek to improve their abilities.

In this sense, discipline applies most closely to fisting; however, this definition of discipline is not common in traditional interpretations of BDSM.

Domination Expressing control over a subjugated partner.

Domination implies force, control, or subjugation. With most bottoms, these items interfere with headspace needed to take fists.

Expressions of dominance in fisting are generally limited to copulatory vocalizations rather than physical manifestations.

S Submission Relinquishing control to a dominant partner.

Many fisters feel they are literally placing their physical and emotional well-being in the hands of their partner. With regular partners, the correlation is stronger than with a single hookup.

Submission is the most relevant BDSM break out in the context of fisting.

Sadism Pleasure from administering physical pain.

Fisters are extremely keen on keeping their holes healthy.

Acts that cause physical and emotional damage do not resonate well with most fisters.

M Masochism Pleasure from subjection to physical pain.

While some individuals find pain during play sexually rewarding, most fisters do not engage in masochist behavior primarily due to dangers associated with fisting. A rip or perforation can be life-threatening. Pain is used as an indicator of when to wind down or even abruptly stop.

Shallow punch play is typically the only practical masochistic fisting activity.

Table 2.1: BDSM Constructs in Fisting Relationships

The traditional BDSM constructs of Bondage–Discipline (BD), Dominance–Submission (DS), and Sadism–Masochism (SM) have limited applicability to most fisting relationships. Of these, dominance and submission are encountered most frequently; however, they are largely independent of topping and bottoming. In many fisting relationships, the bottom exercises greater control over the session than the top.

Training Dynamics

One of the first pieces of advice an experienced fister will share with a novice is, "Fisting isn't anything like porn." Pornography rarely depicts many elements that define a typical fisting session, including negotiation, etiquette, communication, mishaps, and aftercare. These concepts are learned through direct interaction with others.

Common sources of fisting instruction include:

  • Publications | Books and websites provide theory, rationale, and step-by-step instruction.
  • Workshops and Seminars | Local clubs and organizations provide curated lessons on specific fisting topics.
  • Mentors and Coaches | Experienced fisters provide individualized guidance through hands-on experience.

Another, albeit less common, source for fisting instruction limited strictly to hole development is hole trainers.

Mentors and Coaches

Whistle
Figure 2.3: Coaches Promote Skill Development

A coach or mentor helps his student improve fisting abilities by teaching and demonstrating specific skills.

Mentors and coaches help less experienced fisters:

  • Develop functional skills by...

    • Providing instruction and demonstrations on topping and bottoming.
    • Creating and managing appropriate headspace and respiration.
    • Educating on core principles (lube, anatomy, etc.).
  • Improve hole capabilities by...

    • Expanding the hole and fist chute through stretching.
    • Providing advice on toys and routines for self-training activities.
    • Training reflexes to respond to stimuli as pleasurable rather than painful.
  • Integrate into the community by...

    • Sharing resource and networking details.
    • Including mentees in community events.
    • Teaching etiquette and standard protocols to prevent shunning.

When the mentoring relationship involves versatility, unique learning opportunities exist. For example, during a training session a mentor may demonstrate specific breathing techniques while bottoming, lubrication skills while topping, and standard etiquette before and after a session ends.

Those who approach mentorship expecting only hole training are unlikely to retain a mentor for long. Statements or requests such as "seeking someone to train my hole" often signal expectations that are incompatible with a mentoring relationship.

Hole Trainers

Hole trainers have a narrower scope of practice than mentors and coaches. Their primary focus is hole development and activities that improve bottoming skills. Compared to mentors, they typically devote less time to broader education and community integration.

This narrower focus offers several advantages. Most hole trainers identify as top or top-versatile and work well with those who have a closed identity (exclusive bottoms). Because the relationship is centered on hole development, all training time is spent in the hole rather than learning topping skills and other aspects of versatility. Most are willing to press limits for maximum gains.

Despite their expertise, hole trainers who have never, or rarely, bottomed have less firsthand insight into the bottom's experience. They are less likely to understand the physical and psychological concerns associated with bottoming, including pain, fear of injury, douching practices, cleanout challenges, and lubricant sensitivities.

As a result, the rationale behind many safety practices may not be discussed or emphasized. While an experienced hole trainer may practice those principles instinctively, the student may never learn why they are important. This can become problematic when pushing limits or playing with less experienced tops.

For example, an experienced mentor can often recognize when a bottom is approaching an unsafe boundary because he has personally experienced those sensations and understands what constitutes reasonable progression. He can explain those boundaries and teach the bottom how to recognize them. A hole trainer may possess excellent technical skills and still lack that firsthand perspective. He may expect the bottom to communicate when a limit has been reached, while the inexperienced bottom assumes the hole trainer will recognize it. Without a shared understanding of what those limits feel like, both individuals may unknowingly progress beyond a safe point before either realizes intervention is needed.

Training
Figure 2.4: Regular Training Effort Required

Bottoms seeking to improve their abilities can utilize coaches, mentors, or hole trainers; however, progress is severely limited if they refuse to do the heavy lifting and complete training and conditioning activities on their own.

Inappropriate Behaviors and Expectations

Newcomers can alienate peers and spoil relationships with mentors, coaches, and hole trainers through certain behaviors and inappropriate expectations:

  • Behavior: Relinquishing Responsibility

Explanation: Delegating responsibility for hole development to another is like a weightlifter asking his personal trainer to do his sets and reps for him. It frustrates playmates, mentors, and hole trainers when the burden for opening a hole or developing a skill is placed primarily upon them.

Resolution(s): (1) Integrate personal training time into your weekly schedule. (2) Avoid making requests such as "Train my hole!" or "Open me up!". As requests, these statements indicate an extreme lack of knowledge, wrong assumptions about fisting relationships, or an unrealistic expectation of roles and responsibilities. They are usually received poorly.

  • Behavior: Withholding or Suppressing Feedback

Explanation: Failure to give or take feedback in a session indicates a misunderstanding of power dynamics. Remaining quiet and withholding feedback forces a top to make some assumptions based on body language and responsivity. Suppressing feedback from a partner limits growth opportunities and can force a playmate to suffer in silence.

Resolution(s): (1) Speak up if something makes you uncomfortable or uneasy. When the right headspace cannot be achieved, the hole closes down and connection is broken. (2) Start sessions with a discussion regarding body tells, safe words, and communication styles. For example, a top may ask: "Do you do anything that lets me know we are on the right track, and you are enjoying the experience?".

  • Behavior: Time Thievery

Explanation: Developing basic or advanced skills takes many hours of work over a long period of time. Hole growth is slow and requires regular activity (at least twice a week) for progress to occur. Expecting a trainer or mentor to do all of the work is unrealistic and disrespectful. Their time is also important.

Resolution(s): (1) Integrate personal training time into your weekly schedule. (2) Complete the homework assignments given. (3) Arrive ready to play (both physically and mentally).

Remember that mentors, coaches, and hole trainers are unable to dedicate all of their time and energy to a single student. They have to care for their own needs inside and outside of fisting. For growth to occur, students must complete homework assignments and seek additional play opportunities outside the training/mentoring relationship. Students who fail to remain active between sessions progress more slowly and may eventually be dropped in favor of those who demonstrate greater commitment.

Regular Play Partners

Regular play partners often develop skills more rapidly than those who play exclusively with new or unfamiliar partners. Repeated sessions allow both individuals to become familiar with each other's anatomy, communication style, preferences, and physical limitations. As trust develops, less time is spent establishing rapport and more time can be devoted to refining techniques, exploring new challenges, and providing meaningful feedback.

Support Roles

Not everyone contributes to a fisting session as a top or bottom. Friends and peers often provide support before, during, and after play. They may introduce compatible partners, assist with lubrication, monitor safety, provide emotional encouragement, or help troubleshoot problems that arise during a session. Although these roles receive little recognition, they often improve safety, reduce anxiety, and contribute to a more positive overall experience.

Collaborative Learning

Peers provide valuable opportunities for collaborative learning. Unlike mentors or hole trainers, peers typically learn alongside one another by exchanging observations, discussing successes and failures, comparing techniques, and sharing resources. Because both individuals are actively developing their skills, each contributes to the learning process. This collaborative exchange often exposes both partners to new ideas and perspectives that might otherwise go unexplored.

Myths and Misconceptions

Most disinformation and misconceptions related to penetration roles, fisting relationships, and interaction dynamics is due to assumptions derived from non-fisting sexual experiences.

BDSM Interaction
Claims or Assumptions

Fisting bottoms want to be dominated.

Submission is necessary component of fisting.

Fisting is inherently a sadomasochistic activity.

Reality

BDSM constructs are largely absent in fisting sessions and relationships.

While some fisters do engage in dom/sub behavior, it is rare. In some circumstances, tops are submissive to bottoms.

Remediation

Discuss prior to play expectations and roles. If a BDSM construct is mutually agreeable, include it in your play session.

Develop an exit strategy before play begins. If a partner disregards established boundaries or introduces non-consensual BDSM behaviors, terminate the session immediately and disengage from the relationship.

For additional information, see:

Power Dynamics
Claims or Assumptions

The top is in control.

Bottoms should avoid being bossy.

Reality

There is risk of severe injury or fatality during any fisting session. Because the stakes are so high, the bottom is usually in control of the pace and intensity.

Bossy bottoms understand their holes and needs. Ignoring or dismissing their requests creates a headspace and environment that makes fisting difficult or impossible.

Remediation

Make every effort to follow the requests of the bottom. Allow him to set the pace and control. If his control over the session doesn't vibe with your style, terminate the session.

Familiarize yourself with typical body language that grants consent and encourages deeper engagement.

Avoid substances that may alter consciousness and foster a loss of control. For additional information, see:

Identity Constraints
Claims or Assumptions

I just wasn't made to top.

He's got a hand/arm—he's just selfish.

Reality

Individuals will always have a preference, even if it is prematurely determined. Forcing a playmate or fister into a role he isn't comfortable with is gross and borders on rapey.

Remediation

Clarify in advance the roles of each partner in a session. If these roles are incompatible, cancel the session. Never bottom shame another fister for his identity but encourage him to have open mind. For additional information, see:

Training Expectations
Claims or Assumptions

A good top can train my hole.

Tops and bottoms should push limits.

Reality

Most fisters do not want to train a bottom. The request shifts responsibility from the bottom to the top. While there are fisters that work well with newcomers, they should not be treated as hole whispers.

Pushing limits results in injuries.

Remediation

Avoid the phrases "Train my hole" and "Open my hole!", especially when seeking out playmates.

Discuss prior to the session start any limits and the comfort levels of both partners in pushing those limits. For additional information, see:

Course Appendix

The following material may guide the development and deployment of this topic:

Objectives

Upon completing this course, the student will be able to:

  • Define identity foreclosure and give at least one reason why a locked identity detrimentally affects a fister.
  • Give two reasons why a majority of fisters do not consider fisting a BDSM activity.
  • Enumerate the approximate percentage of fisters that identify as tops, bottoms, and vers.
  • Contrast mentors with trainers.
  • List at least two reasons why a training relationship may break down or be ineffective.
  • Compare the roles and responsibilities of regular play partners with those of mentors, coaches, and hole trainers.
  • Provide three myths commonly associated with activity roles or fisting relationships.

Note: Objectives should follow instructional design standards and be easily measurable with little ambiguity.
